What happened on this day in US-China relations
Learn about the people and events from the past that are shaping US-China relations today
Regular, brief posts for the China-curious and China-serious
I have more books than I know what to do with. Among them are some hundreds of books on Chinese history, and whenever I’ve visited a used book store over the past couple decades (here’s looking at you, Raven Used Books), I found myself quickly owning even more.
For one year this has been a project in making more of the information in these books accessible to myself - and also a broader audience. Supplemented by other internet-found sources (YouTube, National Archives, other), posts consist of brief summaries relating to the people, stories, and events relating to the US and China that took place on a certain day in history.
The ordered recollection of past events is a consequence of our ability as a species to measure time and the desire to delineate future behavior: previously the heaviest rains came on these days - what should we do this year?
While seasonal environmental changes as the indirect experience of planetary rotation are so constant over time so as to shape the development of biological life and social customs, the predictive power of human events lies mostly in our willingness to remember that past performance is often indicative of future results. Nevertheless, the ordering of events in an unfamiliar way together with our desire to find patterns in the random can lead to new connections being drawn and discovering what is most representative of the two countries relationship.
